About DIY Trips

I have spent the last fifteen years DIY fishing on some of the worlds greatest flats and would like to show you those places and share with you what I have learned.

DIY Flats Fishing is not a guide or booking service and I do not "HOST" trips, there are lots of great providers of these services which I have recommended in the Links section.

terra maya dockI book six one week trips per season, mostly to areas I have fished in the past.  I'm always looking for new people to join me to share the experience.  I don't "host" the trip and am just one of the fishermen. I pay what you pay.

Everyone chips in for the food and cooking, but mostly we fish.  Typically 4-6 people are on the trip and we try to stay in one house.  I don't book based on price but do try to keep the week as economical as possible.  My DIY trips are designed for bonefish and permit fisherman of varying skills who are interested in fishing for flats species on their own terms.

Normally, I arrange the accommodation, car rental, guides, etc. but always looking for alternatives if someone in the group has suggestions.

As a Do It Yourself bonefishing trip there are no schedules or routines, you are free to fish from dawn to dusk or take a more laid back approach.

You will be provided with as much or as little pre-trip help as you need.

Benefits of one of my Do It Yourself Bonefishing Trips

I'm an experienced salt water flats fisherman who has fished the targeted flats many times.

The primary advantage is to "shorten the learning curve" and get you into fish right away.  You won't be wasting time trying to find the right flats to fish or guessing which tide is the best for each flat.  The goal is to have you casting to fish on your first day.

The planning is easy for you as most of the work is done.  The accommodation and car rentals are done, we grocery shop together once at the location and if you want I can book 1-2 days of guided fishing (which I recommend).Belize permit

Like you, I am there to fish but I really enjoy helping others, so if you need help spotting fish, casting or whatever you just need to let me know.

Equipment set up and fly selection will be discussed in advance of your trip in addition to the recap sessions held each evening.

Everyone is responsible for their own gear, but in case yours is lost in transit, you have forgotten something or it breaks during the week I often have a backup.

What To Expect

In order to prepare for the trip I will communicate with you prior to the trip and answer any questions you might have.

To avoid having to co-oridinate flight schedules I will meet you at the DIY location (normally the local airport).  We then pick up the rental cars (everyone signs on the dotted line), go grocery shopping and unpack at the house.

Accommodations are set up as double occupancy and generally located in a private home or condo located as close to the flats as possible.

All accommodations have kitchens and we prepare most of our own meals.  As the group wants we can go out for dinner once or twice but the options are often very limited.

Each night there will be a recap of the days events and a planning session for the next day.  In other words we drink and tell stories.

The length of the fishing day is completely up to you, there is no schedule.

 DIY Hosted Trips

I don't provide "Hosted" trips but am happy to provide LINKS to those that do.  I may not have fished with the hosts previously but will have fished the locations and know the hosts through other venues.
